The God Who Sees Us

She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her. "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me." - Genesis 16:13 (NIV)
On a nice clear sunny day, Misery sat alone in a wooden rowboat in the middle of an ocean. Everything was calm, so it seemed, but quietly a storm was brewing. See, Misery was extremely in love with company- in fact she could not stand to be alone. Therefore, as her distress about being by herself grew, she decided to invite some people with her so she could have some companionship. She called in Darkness, who is nicknamed Depression to bring in clouds to blot out the sun, which invited rain to come sprinkle down from the sky. This rain was Misery's tears as she cried sometimes for reasons she could not explain, which caused Hurricane Wind also known as Confusion to stir up the waves in the water. Then rouge waves hundreds of feet high crashed into Misery's boat almost crushing it to pieces. Also invited aboard were Thunder of Frustration and Lightening of Anger whom caused Misery's boat to tremble and the whole sky to explode with flashes of fury. Suddenly Lightening of Anger became uncontrollable and he struck her boat causing it to burst into flames as it slowly began to sink. Misery was suffering so much that the only thing she could do was yell, "SOS!" Immediately after she yelled this, the storm left and everything became bright, calm and sunny again. From a distance Misery saw Joy rowing towards her, he had been watching her, waiting until she invited him to be her company.
In Genesis 16:1-13 it speaks about how Abram's wife Sarai took her maidservant named Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife, because she could not have any children of her own. To make a long story short, once Hagar knew she was pregnant, she began to despise Sarai. This made Sarai bitter and upset and caused her to begin mistreating Hagar. Hagar was so miserable that she ran away. Yet, in the worst moment of her misery, God saw her and it was then that He spoke to, instructed, and gave her a promise. Just like Hagar, sometimes we may go through things in our lives that cause us to feel miserable, but guess what, we do not have to stay in that state of mind. Remember that the enemy wants us to wallow in our miserable mess; he wants our clouds of depression to blot out the Son (Jesus), which will cause us to sink into our circumstances. However, God sees what we are going through and He wants us to call out to Him for help, because He is our ever-present help in our time of trouble (Psalm 46:1). So lets invite Him to be our company, so He can make our joy complete, by speaking to, instructing and giving us a promise.
